 Pam Hammonds, Monticello Better Hometown Director, accepts the designation from Gale Norton, U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

Monticello was designated a Preserve America Community in March 2004.  The city was one of only six Georgia communities named in the second round of designations preceded only by Augusta which was designated in January 2004.  Monticello was one of the first 33 communities in the nation gain this recognition.  The Preserve America Community designation recognizes communities that:

  • protect and celebrate their heritage;
  • use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization; and
  • encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs

 Preserve America is a White House initiative in cooperation with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
