Sources of Water
Monticello gets 70% of its water from a surface water source, the City Reservoir. Water is withdrawn from a point just above the Dam. The Reservoir is kept full by withdrawals from Pope and Lowery Branches. The remaining 30% is a groundwater source (4 deep wells), which come from the Crystalline Rock Aquifer. These two sources are blended together at the end of the treatment process. This provides the city with a safe and dependable supply of water. |
Drinking Water Information
The City of Monticello is pleased to report that your drinking water meets and/or exceeds all safety and quality standards set by the State of Georgia and the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA). EPD has determined that the concentration of certain water quality monitoring parameters does not change frequently within our system. As health scientists learn more about our environment and the effect of contaminants in the environment on human health, new standards will continue to be set for drinking water. Monticello Waterworks continues to add new technology in order to be able to meet future standards.

Treatment Process
Alum is added to both the water taken from the Reservoir and the water taken from the wells to cause the finely divided mud particles to clump together so that the mud and other particles will settle to the bottom of the settling tanks by gravity.
The clear waters are then filtered and disinfected with chlorine to make the waters biologically safe. The pH is adjusted by adding lime to make the water non-corrosive, and fluoride is added to help prevent dental cavities.
