            Facade Grant Program

How does the program work? The Monticello Facade Improvement Matching Grant Program is administered by the Downtown Development Authority through the Monticello Economic Restructuring, Inc. as a part of The Monticello Better Hometown Program. Funds are available for facade improvements in downtown Monticello (see map). Commercial tenants or property owners may receive reimbursement of 50% (not to exceed $500) of the cost of an approved storefront renovation.

What type of project is eligible? Eligible projects will visibly improve the unique historic character of the storefront. Examples include but are not limited to appropriate signage; awnings; exterior painting; and window, door, and storefront feature restoration. These funds are available for exterior improvements only and may be applied to a front, side or rear facade, provided the facade faces a public street or parking area.

The Monticello Historic Preservation Commission must approve projects within the historic district before construction begins. Judgment on eligibility will be based on appropriateness for the district as outlined in the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation.

What help is available to me? The Department of Community Affairs provides a design consultant to Better Hometown communities to help you plan your project. The Monticello Better Hometown Director and the Preservation-Planner can provide assistance and referral.

What must I do to receive the grant?

*Determine if the project will require a building permit or any other permit and complete the application. Information is available at City Hall.

*Complete a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) application and a facade grant application and turn them in to the Better Hometown office at City Hall. If you are a tenant, include a letter of permission from the property owner.

*The Monticello Historic Preservation Commission/Better Hometown Design committee will review the Certificate of Appropriateness and notify you of their decision.

*Following approval of the COA, the Monticello Downtown Development Authority will review the facade grant application and notify you of their decision.

*Start and complete facade improvement work between the appropriate window time frame.

*After the completion of facade improvement work, turn in all appropriate receipts, invoices and canceled checks. *The Monticello Downtown Development Authority will review these items and the completed project and then Monticello Economic Restructuring, Inc will disburse grant money.

Are there any restrictions? Because limited funds are available, Monticello Economic Restructuring, Inc. cannot grant funds to the same building more than twice in a three year period.
